Application

Project applications are accepted only within the scope of an open Call. Applications must be filed electronically through the submission system.

Applications may be submitted by research facilities or individual researchers. Research facilities encompass universities as well as extra-university research institutions. Where individuals apply, they need to work in an institutional setting that is adequate for the envisaged project dimension. Applicants generally are based in Vienna or will be working there upon the start of the project.

Once a Call is closed, all applications are given a check on formal points. The lack of a major component, a serious formal fault or not following good scientifc practice may already at this point in time result in the application’s elimination from the further assessment procedure.

A key factor of the selection process is the ex ante evaluation of applications performed solely by international experts: we aim to obtain at least three expert reviews for each application. A strictly international jury then uses these peer reviews together with its own expertise to formulate a funding recommendation for funding the best projects.

The formal decision is then made by the WWTF Board of Directors that has never ever changed a jury recommendation.
